The 2008 Pearl River Forum on Intellectual Property and Innovation

The 2008 Pearl River Forum on Intellectual Property and Innovation sponsored by Intellectual Property Office of Guangdong Province (GDIPO), U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), adjunctively sponsored by Intellectual Property Office of Guangzhou Municipality (GZIPO), specially supported by U.S. Consulate General, Guangzhou, was held in Guangdong International Hotel on July 15, 2008. More than 20 intellectual property experts from U.S. and China, lawyers and corporation IP specialists gathered together to discuss Intellectual Property and Innovation. At the same time, more than 100 Chinese and U.S. corporation representatives and government representatives from relevant IP agencies of both countries attended this forum, among which around 30 of the attendees are corporate members of AmCham South China. 

 

 

Guangdong Provincial Intellectual Property Office deputy director Mr. Zhu Wanchang stated that the total import and export volume of Guangdong accounts for one third of volume of all China. Therefore U.S. and China need to work together in the protection of intellectual property.

 

After the U.S., China Intellectual Property Forum was held successfully in 2005 and 2006, Mr. Robert Goldberg, U.S. Consul General in Guangzhou emphasized the importance of the IPR protection again at the forum this year. “Today we advance the challenges of intellectual property to face in order to find ways of encourage innovation, which is not completed only by a government.”

 

The speech guests of this forum also included the honorable Larry J. McKinney who is the Chief Judge for U.S. District Court, Southern District, Indiana, the corporation representatives from Caterpillar, Huawei Technologies, P&G, Hong Kong Productivity Council, ZTE, and Life Sciences College of Zhongshan University. And David Buxbaum, IPR Committee Chair of AmCham South China and Attorney of Anderson and Anderson LLP, also shared his views and experiences on evidentiary preparation and case presentation to the attendees.
