ITOR’s Note

Dr. Harley Seyedin Congratulations go out to the 70th U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
President Several key Democrats joined Republican Senators by supporting Director
AmCham South China Pompeo’s confirmation. Their decisions came as editorial boards across the
country praised his invaluable mix of instincts and experience. Mr. Pompeo is
a West Point and Harvard Law graduate who served three terms in Congress.
The Wall Street Journal’s Editorial Board wrote. “He has invigorated the CIA
clandestine service, tried to give Mr. Trump options on North Korea, and has
gained the President’s trust.”

U.S.-China negotiations are continuing, and in our opinion, continued
negotiations are the best way to go. AmCham South China is certainly
doing its part locally through promotion of investment cooperation. An
example is helping the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Co-Organize the China
(Guangdong)-U.S. Investment Cooperation Conference in Guangzhou in
May. Myron Brilliant, Executive Vice President and Head of International
Affairs at U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Co-Chaired the event together
with Guangdong Governor, Ma Xingrui, and after saying some very kind
words about our Chamber said, “The successful economic development
of Guangdong is due to the reform and opening up that creates excellent
business environment and dynamic market for many enterprises.” Governor
Ma Xingrui, said at the opening ceremony that in recent years, Guangdong
has been strengthening its economic and trade partnership with the United
States. Particularly, the joint projects signed at last year’s conference saw
robust progress, promoting bilateral trade and investment. Fifteen joint
projects with investment of $ 2.28 billion were signed at last year’s meeting
which was organized by AmCham South China as a part of the 2017 APCAC
Asia Pacific Business Summit—also hosted by AmCham South China.

Alas, we must say farewell to the U.S. Consul General in Guangzhou
Charles Bennett. Under Bennett’s watch, Guangdong continued to be the
most important trading partner for the U.S. on the Chinese mainland. The
statistics show that in 2017, the trade volume between the two sides was
$127.33 billion, accounting for 21.8 percent of total volume between China
and the United States.

Finally, I would like to say how much fun I had seeing all of you at this
year’s AmCham Spring Ball. I am sure all of you felt it was easier getting past
LN Garden Hotel bouncers than at Studio 54 in New York City. None of it,
however, would have been possible without the best American Chamber of
Commerce staff in China if not the world.
