Charles Bennett This March, in recognition of Women’s History Month, I would like to
Consul General reflect on women’s empowerment and gender parity within the world
Consulate General of the United of commerce. The United States is at the forefront of many initiatives
States of America, Guangzhou, China worldwide raising awareness about the important role that women play in
business. For example, the Global Entrepreneurship Summit recently held
in Hyderabad, India, featured the theme, “Women First, Prosperity for
All.” The Summit highlighted women innovators and business leaders. At
the U.S. Consulate in Guangzhou, we regularly sponsor events on women’s
rights, empowerment, entrepreneurship, women in STEM, and other
topics highlighting the contributions of women across fields.

In the context of our U.S.-China bilateral relationship, many U.S.
multinational companies have introduced programs in China to promote
female leadership and diversity in the workplace. Successful models
such as Goldman Sachs’ “10,000 Women” and MasterCard’s “Women’s
Entrepreneurship Fund” are good examples. Initiatives like these raise
public awareness of the need to increase representation of women at the
highest levels of corporations at international levels.

We all must do our part to help raise women’s visibility in the
corporate board room and among the highest-level executives in senior
management. Female executives have expressed the importance of
mentorships and peer networks in raising the confidence of women in
industry and effecting change within the workplace. I wholeheartedly
welcome opportunities to lend my support to U.S.-China women executive
networks in south China.

Empowering women is a global issue and makes good business sense.
