AmCham-USCBC
Trade Talk
Briefing

Since the announcement that the United
States and China agreed in principle
to a “phase one” trade agreement, much
remains uncertain about the scope of the
deal. Both sides appear optimistic about
the prospect of reaching an official partial
deal in time for Presidents Trump and Xi
to sign in mid-November on the sidelines
of the Asia Pacific Economic Conference
(APEC). With the cancellation of APEC
Summit by Chile, a new venue is being
discussed by both parties. However,
negotiators have yet to reach consensus on
many of the key issues.

To offer a better understanding of the
issues at stake, AmCham South China
joined hands with the US-China Business
Council (USCBC) to host a briefing
session on the ongoing US-China trade
talks on Oct 23 at AmCham office. World
reigning strategy guru Professor Michael
Enright at University of Hong Kong,
AmCham President Dr. Harley Seyedin,
and President of the USCBC Amb. Craig
Allen shared their in-depth insights on
the tariff’s impact on businesses in China,
the happenings in Washington, and the
cautiously optimistic future of the world’s
two largest economies.

Ambassador Allen flew to Guangzhou
to brief AmCham South China members
after meeting with Chinese Premier Li
Keqiang and other Chinese senior officials
in Beijing. The Ambassador shared that
Premier Li had told his delegation China
would continue to open its doors to US
and foreign companies, and that the
government would ensure IPR protection
and improve the market environment for
foreign companies.■
